“Worse than suffering is not suffering – forever.” – Húmus, Raul Brandão.
The street where he was born in Porto and the Municipal Library of Guimarães is now named after him.
After attending the Higher Course of Letters, Raul Brandão entered the military career in 1888, from which he retired in 1911 since writing was his true vocation. As a descendant of fishermen and his childhood spent in the fishing area of Foz do Douro, the theme of the sea and nature was recurrent in Brandão’s works. Other themes include pain, travel, dreams, and poverty.
Raúl Brandão published short stories, travel books, plays, and historical studies
