David Mourão-Ferreira

24th February, 1927 (Lisbon, Portugal) – 16th June, 1996 (Lisbon, Portugal)

At our boutique hotel in the center of Porto, Torel Palace Porto, we pay homage to David Mourão-Ferreira in one of our Executive Superior category hotel rooms, with a balcony overlooking the city.

Located on the third and top floor of our palace, this room was decorated by designer Isabel Sá Nogueira, with the portrait of the author being created by Jorge Curval.

Opposite the twin bed and outside the bathroom, the wall is entirely covered in a mirror, one of the most ridiculous features of the room.

“For me, writing is first and foremost about making love with words.” – A Happy Love, David Mourão-Ferreira.

Considered one of the greatest contemporary Portuguese poets of his time, he gained notoriety with his poems performed by the famous fado singer Amália Rodrigues, such as Sombra, Maria Lisboa, Fado Peniche, and Barco Negro.

David Mourão-Ferreira had “the craft of writing”: he needed to live to write and write to live. It had as reference and inspiration the authors José Régio and Almeida Garrett, among others.

“Poet of love and sensuality”, the writer celebrates eroticism and the body through his words. He is therefore the author of the most beautiful Portuguese love poems. Despite having explored other themes, he was mainly known for the romantic theme.

His literary works were recognized by the award of eleven literary prizes: among others, three for poetry and four for romance.
